Henry Crane Brice (September 22, 1797 – May 4, 1867) was born in Frenchay, Bristol, Somerset, on September 22, 1797, and was christened in Winterbourne, Gloucestershire. He came from an established local family as the son of Edward Brice of Frenchay, a Bristol banker, sugar refiner, and twice Sheriff of Bristol. He was one of several siblings, sharing his lineage with his brother Edward Cowell Brice, who was born in 1795 and became a founding member of the Cambridge Apostles.
Henry Crane Brice received his early education at Bristol Grammar School under Dr. Goodenough. Continuing his academic path at the University of Cambridge, he was admitted as a sizar at Christ's College on October 9, 1820, at the age of twenty-one, and matriculated in the Easter term of 1821. He successfully earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1825 and later proceeded to obtain his Master of Arts in 1830. Aligning with his academic achievements and intellectual engagements as a member of the Cambridge Apostles, he entered the church. He was ordained a deacon in 1825 and was subsequently ordained a priest in Bristol on August 28 of the same year.
His ecclesiastical career was chiefly defined by a long tenure at St Peter's in Bristol, Somerset, where he served as rector from 1829 until his death in 1867. Over a span of thirty-seven years, he dedicated his life to his congregation, a ministry commemorated by a monumental inscription in St Peter's describing him as having laboured in the church as a "faithful Shepherd of the sheep."
Henry Crane Brice passed away on May 4, 1867, at the age of sixty-nine, and was buried at Arno's Vale Cemetery in Bristol. Family ties with Cambridge continued through the next generation, including his relationship to his son, Frederick Henry Brice, who was born in 1849.
